We Overconsume Way Too Much

I believe the economy is important. Without the economy we would have no jobs to go to which help pay the bills and allows us to have a roof over our head. Remember the great depression and how people lived because of no economy? However that was caused because of the overconsumption lifestyle we lived during the roaring 1920s. There are pros and cons to the economy of course, but I still feel it’s very important. However, we as Americans do consume way too much stuff. We are running out of resources too quickly. I agree with what Annie Leonard had to say in the “Story of Stuff” video entirely (Leonard, 2007). She makes a lot of good points. We need to really reconsider our buying habits. We definitely overconsume, which takes away resources that our planet needs to survive and give us life. We should really rethink our strategy. I do believe those of the older generations were more concerned about the environment than we are today, and back in those days there weren’t any environmental agencies. According to a poll on MSNBC, 76% of millennials believe they care more about the environment than their parents. I tried to find articles referring to their grandparents, but couldn’t find any. I personally believe people were more concerned about the environment during our grandparents days though compared to now. They reused everything and stocked up on things and didn’t overconsume. Yes, Watching so much television because we are tired is bad for us. It causes us to overconsume because we see things on the tv we want, but don’t necessarily need. Which causes to work more than we should in order to pay for the junk we don’t need. Yes, the government may be for the people and by the people, but should we really expect them to make laws forcing us to not over consume, protect our environment, and recycle? No. Forcing people to do the right thing makes them not want to even more. But if you give them a choice, most people will do the right thing. This video hit home for me. When I worked a regular job, I was very depressed. I felt like my life had no meaning. I wasn’t happy with my job, only making minimum wage and working part time and not having much to show for it. I was also in my 20s and early 30s holding jobs that I had no chance of a real career in. I felt like a failure to the world, and that I wasn’t even important. I felt like another waste on society. All I would do is go home and work, and I couldn’t do much else to better myself because of that work. A tornado destroyed a grocery store I was working at which allowed me to go back to school in 2012, and ever since I’ve been a part of things. I’m more involved in actitvities going on in my community. I feel much happier as a person, and not like a failure anymore. Having money and overconsuming isn’t important; however being able to be with your family, and friends, and helping out where you can in your community is. I don’t believe or agree with this overconsumption mentality. We need to recycle as much as we can and even re-sell or donate things we don’t use or need anymore, and I do this as much as I can. As far as television goes, I do like to watch it as well, however get rid of anything that shows these ads. I do not subscribe to cable or satellite for shows, therefore I get none of these ads. As a business person, and capitalist though I also understand the business man’s point of view as well. They have to market themself in order to sell their products, or else they go bankrupt and out of business, causing them to not have a job and be homeless. Which is why economy is important. So we need marketing, but we don’t need overconsumption, but than the marketing leads to overconsumption because it causes you to buy buy buy. Maybe if that marketing presented something telling people to re-sell or donate their old item when they buy a new one? Maybe if that marketing even presented something telling people to buy only when absolutely necessary. But will that keep a business in business very long? Remember the old maytag commercials with the bored maytag man? He was bored because nobody bought new washers and dryers because they lasted a long time. I don’t have the answers. Wake Up, America

It is pretty messed up that we have to live in a country that has amendments that the supreme court is to uphold, yet in today’s America they don’t do an honest job and here’s why: 1st amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Yet, when the Supreme court announced their ruling of gay marriage being legal, and Kim Davis (the woman from Kentucky jailed for following her Christian convictions) got denied first amendment rights for practicing her convinctions.  I’m sure if a muslim did it, we wouldn’t even be talking about this right now!  For the first time in American history, someone got jailed for their Christian faith.  That’s wrong.
Yes, there is a statement in the 14th amendment that does state EVERY person has equal rights, so not trying to deny any one their rights here.  And for the sake of proving my facts I’ll state it here:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
However, this country has states rights.  Always has.  If they didn’t, than why on earth are we voting on state laws for each year then?  Why do Washington and Colorado have legalized pot than if states rights do not exist?  Look it up in the 10th amendment:
“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
If a state votes against gay marriage that should honestly be their perogrative.  And in all honesty, according to Glenn Beck the government needs to get out of the marriage business in the first place.  The point of needing a license to marry was started by the government for tax purposes only, but in reality God doesn’t require you to need a license.  Nor does a preacher.  A preacher only needs one now because of a law, but pretty soon there is going to be laws made forcing preachers to go against their conscience and marry gay couples now.  When will this end?
It’s a double standard honestly.  Gay rights activists can say and do whatever they want to get their movement accomplished, however when a christian says their view on gay marriage they are called a homophobe and told they don’t have a right to speak.  Uhm, so you mean to tell me you have the right to speak your beliefs under the first amendment, but I don’t have the right to speak my beliefs under the same amendment?
I know for a fact they are practicing a double standard.  I have caught them in it with their own mouths!  I had to block one of them the other day on facebook (first time I ever had to block anyone), and he told me he’s not hypocritical.  Has no reason to be.  Yet, later he said that he has a right to stand for what he believes and christians don’t; and he also said that some friends of his defended him because of his standing up for what he believes.  So let me get this straight: you can state how you feel, but others can’t?  Isn’t that hypocritical?  It’s a double standard.
And before I get attacked, let me say this: I have nothing against homosexuals.  Never have and never will.  But once you take a stand on morals you are automatically called a homophobe.  I just think that they need to keep their bedroom lifestyles to themselves.  I also say the same for straight folks.  I guess that also makes me “straightophobe.”  I know what people talk about amongst each other in the work place.  Why should I be forced to hear about how your life is in the bedroom?  That’s between you, your partner, and God.  It’s not the rest of the world’s business.  All open sexuality does is causes a breakdown to society.  Take a look at our kids for example.  You have little girls expecting to wear sexualized shorts because that’s all parents can find in the stores anymore, and they wander why their kids are losing virginities at 10 years of age anymore.  Something that is supposed to precious to her, these days isn’t. and you wander why you hear about all these rape cases amongst kids, and pregnancy rates are occurring in kids as young as 10!  It’s insane.  God designed it for married couples only.  No, we can’t force people to make the right choices, but we need to educate them so that they hopefully do.  Wake up, America!

Trip To Nashville - April 07, 2012

On April 07, 2012 (the day before Easter) I took a day trip business trip with a friend of mine to Nashville, Tennessee.  We left at midnight and got there at 8 in the morning, and left at 3pm and got there around 11pm to make it home by easter.  This 15minute video is a good intro video to show what to expect from Nashville.

Don’t Recognize Myself These Days

I do not know what to say or think on things currently.  I do not know how to take my success I have been given.  There are so many emotional thoughts going on through my brain.  Growing up, I was never a part of anything.  I was always bullied, and the last one chosen for anything.  Lots of times I even sat out during PE class and read a book because of constant harassment.  I was a very quiet, shy, and introverted person.  And when people in high school would pick on me just for fun, I wouldn’t know it because of how bullied I was when I was younger.  Yes, I felt like a total loser growing up.  I didn’t even go to my own prom.  I graduated high school in 1999 toward the bottom of my class, and then went straight to work after graduation.  Working a dead end grocery store job that barely paid for anything, and then going on to a dead end night shift job at Walmart where it felt like the movie “Groundhog Day.”  Other jobs I would have would have the same effect.  I would go to work, and then come home, and the next day do it over again.  Nothing very exciting.  I was constantly depressed because I felt there was something more to life than just that.  I had desires of running my own business and doing media work but didn’t see any way or chance how.  I just felt lousy as a human being.  I just felt like a lonely retail stocker that wasn’t important.

My life has been changing these past couple of years (especially this last year) and I just don’t know what to think about it or how to handle it.  What my life is like now is not the Mike Irvan I know, and don’t get me wrong – I am 100% proud of myself for what I have accomplished in my life the last couple years.  I just don’t know how to deal with it or take it.  For the first time in my life I feel successful and for the first time in my life my dad told me he’s proud of me.  My last semester at Northark College I made the Dean’s list, I took a test one of my teachers suggested I should take and ended up 2nd place in the state of Arkansas for that test, which allowed me to go to the National PBL Conference in Chicago this last week.  I didn’t even go to any of the PBL meetings so didn’t consider myself a member, and I was shocked I got 2nd place in the state competition.  I don’t win at anything.  So I was able to go to a major competition event for the first time in my life, and felt like I was a part of something.  I felt accepted as part of their team.  It was an amazing experience.  I even got a chance to go on the stage to sub for somebody else which was pretty cool, and I also got to finally go into the Sears tower, and walked onto the ledge – which was intense!  It was amazing!

And on top of that, a couple of great people from church hired me to do video work for their production company.  I am now accomplishing things I have always wanted to do, I just never saw how.  I can’t even recognize this new Mike Irvan.  I now feel like I’m apart of things that are important and not doing the same old depressing grind.

God got a hold of me a couple of years ago, and my life hasn’t been the same ever since.  I just wish certain people I’m close to in my life who I love dearly would be proud of me for the accomplishments I’ve made in my life instead of just ignoring me because of other mistakes I make in my life.

Ronnie Hurst likes to joke that the photo of him and Rachael Lynee Burns is the “beauty and the beast” photo, then cracks, “but she’s not that bad.”

But she is the beauty, with the pageant cred to back it up: She was crowned Miss Texas International 2014 on March 16, 2014, and she has earned several other Miss Texas International and Miss Texas Galaxy honors since 2010.

She’s also a ballet dancer. Hurst is her manager, a guy with more than two decades of management experience in the entertainment industry, including a stint in the ’90s managing Elvis tribute artist Michael Wroughton, producing dinner theater shows, and writing, directing and producing a show in Branson, Mo.

Just got back home from our trip to Texas, and I have to say that I'm so excited to be on board with Magic Mirror Productions. I really love the concept for The Handi-Capable show and what it's about and I'm glad to be a part of it. These are dreams that just seemed unreachable to me only a few years ago. It's amazing what can happen to someone once God gets a hold of you! I don't recognize me nor my life these days. I just graduated college with my associate's degree in digital media, made the dean's list, and a fantastic christian couple willing to give me a chance to work in media production. I don't take any credit for any of this. I give God the glory for it all. God Deserves The Credit

I feel so blessed right now. I'm just an introverted person who kept to myself a lot. Just a simpleton who doesn't know too much. Sometimes I still feel like that. If you would have told me 3 or more years ago I would graduate with my associate's in digital media and with my small business management degree, I would have laughed. When I first signed up for college in 2012, I still wasn't sure what to think. However, because of certain circumstances that happened in spring 2013 I decided to get right with God come fall 2013. He's changed my life and blessed me in so many ways, and sometimes I wonder - where do I rate? what did I do to deserve this? I don't deserve any of what he's blessed me with. I still have my faults and struggles, but he's blessed me still and all my prayers aren't answered, but some have been. I'm blessed with a 2nd chance: I had an oppourtunity at 17 to work as an intern in media, but blew it - but he has put people in my life that are giving me that 2nd chance. I know I probably say too much about it at times, but I just feel so blessed right now and appreciate Wayne Hicks and Kathy Hicks to give me a chance. I also help out with activities in my community. I'm doing things now, I never thought I would ever do. Some may think I should take all the credit for accomplishments I made the last couple years, but I give all the glory to God. God is who changed my life. Philipians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I'm definitely looking forward to what He has in store for my future. Won 2nd Place In State Competition



If you would have told me a couple of years ago I would have won 2nd place at a state competition, I probably would have laughed at you. I never win anything, let alone a state competition. Last semester one of my teachers advised I'd take a certain test which would help on a resume. A few weeks ago I took the test, and thought I failed it. Come to find out I won second place in state! Now I get to compete at the national level in Chicago in June!

Senseless Cop Shootings

 

Ok, here's how I feel on these stupid cop shootings: apparently another black person got shot and killed by a cop in South Carolina. The cop got fired and put in jail. Should these cops use lethal force? Probably not. They have tasers for a reason. However, with that being said - they doing their job and what they are trained to do. They are trained to get a suspect to stop at any means necessary. This cop told this suspect to stop but instead of stopping the guy ran from the cop so the cop shot him! I'm sorry, but whether you did something wrong or not, if a cop (or any authority for that matter) tells you to stop YOU STOP! quit blaming cops for what they are doing. regardless if it's wrong or right what they are doing, that's not the point. the point is if a cop tries to stop you THAN YOU STOP! use some common sense people! If you stop when told, than these senseless shootings wouldn't be occurring!

Business Card Designed For Christian Bickerton Plumbing

 

This is a business card I created for a friend of mine.  What do you all think about it?

Designing In Word Just Should Not Be Done

 

As a designer myself, I find that designing anything in Microsoft Word is a joke. I hate having to design anything using Word, but unfortunately a class of mine won't allow me to design something using InDesign. It has to be Microsoft Word only. Word is only useful for document creation only. Even though you can use it to make layouts and newsletters, etc. I don't recommend it at all unless it's all you got and you don't have access to a good designer who doesn't use Microsoft Word to design things, lol.
